Duluth Heights elevated water tank project making progress;

water main connection to take place October 18

Work on a significant project aimed at improving water delivery to the Duluth Highland Water Zone area is making progress.  Crews will be working on a water main connection for the new elevated Highland Storage Tank in Duluth Heights on Monday, October 18, 2010.  The new tank will double the current water storage capacity and be able to meet the current and future needs of residents and businesses in the area.

Crews working on the new elevated water tank project will be making the water main connection on Monday, October 18, 2010 from 10:00 p.m. until Tuesday, October 19, 2010, at 8:00 a.m.  As a result of this upgrade, residents along Basswood Avenue between Ideal Street and the northerly dead end will experience a water outage during the specified time.  In addition, the areas of Duluth Heights, Miller Hill Mall, Upper Piedmont, Duluth Airport and the Air National Guard base may experience lower water pressure.

The project involves construction of a 1,000,000 gallon elevated water storage tank at 1710 North Basswood Avenue. The current tanks have a capacity of 500,000 gallons. The smaller of the two existing water towers has been removed leaving the larger tank to provide for current needs until the project is complete.  Yard piping and construction of a building to house the computerized water management system is planned.  The project cost is $2.98 Million and is scheduled to be completed by November 2011.
