City of Duluth to host public meeting for Eklund Avenue project on April 30

[DULUTH, MN] The City of Duluth will hold its first public meeting for the Eklund Avenue project on April 30 at 4:30 pm at Emanuel Baptist Church-Duluth Heights on Eklund Ave.

The Eklund Avenue project (City Project 2091) is located between Swan Lake Road and Maple Grove Road (see location map).

The Eklund Avenue project is in the preliminary design phase to develop a preferred corridor alternative that achieves the primary goals of the project:

  • Traffic Calming: to the extent practicable, reduce cut through traffic and vehicle speeds.
  • Pedestrian Accommodation: the existing section is rural and pedestrians are forced to walk on the shoulder, creating unsafe conditions.  The project aims to accommodate a dedicated pedestrian route.
  • Stormwater Management: the project is rural with roadside ditches in a narrow 50-ft corridor.  The project is seeking an effective way to manage stormwater effectively, provide stormwater treatment, and reduce nuisance ponding and drainage conditions within the Stormwater Study Area.

This first public meeting will be primarily an information-gathering meeting to seek input and feedback.  The format will be an open house with a brief presentation outlining the history of the corridor, including previous City efforts to mitigate the longstanding cut-through traffic issues.

A final design alternative(s) will likely be presented at the second public meeting later this summer. Feedback from this meeting will shape the final design.

The project is scoped as a full street reconstruction project, including utilities.  Final design is to occur this fall/winter with construction expected in 2025.
