SUBJECT: Story and Play in the Parks to have ASL interpretation in August
BY: Elizabeth Spehar

ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation will be offered at the final three sessions of "Story and Play in the Park," an outdoor childhood literacy and play program co-presented by Duluth Public Library and Duluth Parks and Recreation. In its fourth year, Story and Play in the Park is held at various city parks on Monday and Saturday mornings. The program begins with an interactive storytime, hosted by library staff, followed by open play time with equipment, activities, and guidance provided by parks staff.

The library currently provides ASL interpretation at some events where high attendance is anticipated but this will be the first time it is offered at Story and Play in the Park. "We received feedback that ther4e was interest in ASL at storytime for deaf and hard of hearing participants," explained Early Literacy Librarian Carmella Hatch. "I hope that, moving forward, we can provide more interpreted programs like this one. It is our goal to continue learning about and adopting new ways to make our activities and spaces more accessible."

ASL interpretation for Story and Play in the Park is made possible in part by the State of Minnesota, with the support of the Northland Foundation.
