Duluth Fire Department responds to structure fire Friday morning on South Blackman Avenue
[DULUTH, MN] At 10:01 am today, the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to report of a possible structure fire on E Palm Street and S Blackman Avenue.
Crews from Miller Hill were first on scene, and found a single-family, one-story residential structure with fire in the basement. Structural conditions of the house required crews to adopt a defensive strategy in knocking down the fire. 7 Engine crews stretched an attack line, and 1 Engine crews connected to a nearby hydrant. The fire travelled from the basement up through the first floor and into the attic.
Crews from 7 Engine, 1 Engine, 1 Tower, Rescue 1, and 8 Q worked to knock down the fire. Minnesota Power was also called in to the scene to disconnect power.
During DFD’s response, a hydrant line was driven over by an automobile. It is illegal and extremely dangerous to drive over active hydrant lines. Damage to active lines makes an already difficult firefighting scene more difficult, and can put firefighters in danger. When members of the public come upon an active firefighting scene, they should detour around the area to avoid driving over equipment.
No injuries were reported during this incident. The incident is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s office.
Duluth Fire Department thanks its partners at the Duluth Police Department, Minnesota Power, and Saint Louis County 911 for their assistance in the incident.
