Duluth Police Respond to Vehicle Crash at Myers Wilkens Elementary School

At approximately 8:25 a.m., Duluth Police responded to a vehicle that struck the gymnasium of Myer Wilkens Elementary School (1027 N 8th Ave E). Initial investigation shows that a vehicle with two occupants was traveling down bound N 8th Ave E when it ran a stop sign, proceeded through the intersection, went down an embankment, and crashed into the exterior of the gymnasium. The school gymnasium sustained significant damage, but there were no students or staff in the gym at the time of the crash. The two occupants of the vehicle were transported by Mayo Ambulance to a local hospital. This remains an active and ongoing investigation. The School District is examining the stability of the gym and the gym will be closed for an undetermined amount of time. The school is on SECURE protocol and is business as usual inside.
