SUBJECT: Additional DWI Patrols out for Halloween Weekend
BY: Officer Brad Wick, Information Officer

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Halloween Weekend DWI Enforcement
CASE NO.:
INCIDENT DATE: 10/29/2010
INCIDENT TIME:
INCIDENT LOCATION: Duluth and Surrounding Area

The Duluth Police Department, along with UMD, Proctor, Floodwood, and Hermantown Police, the Saint Louis County Sheriff's Department, and the Minnesota State Patrol, will be out in full force this Halloween weekend “haunting” for impaired drivers.

In an effort to make our local roads safer during this Halloween weekend, local law enforcement agencies will be adding additional patrols as part of the state's Pilot Enforcement Project. Halloween is an annual concern for law enforcement officers, especially this year because it falls on a weekend.

Halloween is a deadly time for impaired driving statewide – in the last three years there have been 15 traffic deaths and eight were alcohol related. During those three years 1471 motorists were arrested for DWI.

The Duluth Police Department along with Driving 4 Safe Communities encourages everyone to be responsible during this Halloween weekend and through the holiday season. If you are going out have a plan for a safe ride before you go: have a designated sober driver; take a cab; or plan to stay the night. And always wear your seatbelt.
