Construction to begin on the Sixth Avenue East reconditioning project June 11

[DULUTH, MN] The City of Duluth will begin construction on the Sixth Avenue East reconditioning project on June 11, 2025, with several road closures planned as part of the project’s first phase.

Beginning June 11, the following streets will be closed to vehicle traffic:

  • Ninth Street between Sixth Avenue East and Seventh Avenue East
  • Tenth Street between Central Entrance and Sixth Avenue East

The outside lane in both directions will also be closed as needed on Central Entrance between Mesaba Avenue and Sixth Avenue East and on Sixth Avenue East from Ninth Street to Second Street.

A signed detour will direct motorists to use Tenth Avenue East, East Fourth Street, and Sixth Avenue East to bypass the closure on Ninth Street. While Central Entrance and Sixth Avenue East will remain open during this phase, lane closures in these areas may contribute to slower travel times.

The first phase of work includes lead service line replacements, curb and sidewalk repairs, and traffic signal upgrades. This phase is expected to be completed in July 2025. The full project is anticipated to be completed in October 2025. Additional closures and detours will be announced as needed during construction.

As the project progresses, other improvements will include:

  • Construction of a center median island on Sixth Avenue East between Fifth Street and Ninth Street
  • Traffic signal improvements
  • Street resurfacing of Sixth Avenue East from East Second Street to East Ninth Street, and Central Entrance from Sixth Avenue East to Mesaba Avenue
  • Lane reconfiguration to enhance safety and mobility.
