City of Duluth to close portion of Sixth Avenue East on Monday for reconditioning

[DULUTH, MN] The next phase of the Sixth Avenue East reconditioning project will begin on Monday, August 11, requiring the closure of Sixth Avenue East between East Ninth Street and East Fourth Street.

In addition, the outside lane in both directions will be closed as needed on Central Entrance (between Mesaba Avenue and Sixth Avenue East) and on Sixth Avenue East (from East Fourth Street to East Second Street).

A signed detour route will direct traffic along East Ninth Street, 10th Avenue East, and East Fourth Street to bypass the closure.

The Hillside neighborhood is also undergoing a separate lead service line replacement project that will require intermittent, temporary road closures at various locations throughout the neighborhood as underground services are replaced.

This construction phase includes lead service line replacements, curb and sidewalk repairs, the construction of a center median island on Sixth Avenue East between Fifth Street and Ninth Street, and the resurfacing of Sixth Avenue East within the closure area. This phase is expected to be completed in September, with full project completion anticipated in October.

As the project progresses, other improvements will include:

  • Traffic signal improvements
  • Remaining street resurfacing of 6th Avenue E from E Second Street to E Ninth Street and Central Entrance from Sixth Avenue E to Mesaba Avenue
  • Lane reconfiguration to enhance safety and mobility

The City of Duluth thanks its residents and visitors for their understanding and patience during this busy construction season.
