Traffic impacts beginning Thursday, September 25 as Sixth Avenue E reconditioning project progresses
[DULUTH, MN] Paving work for the Sixth Avenue East reconditioning project will begin on Thursday, September 25, 2025, resulting in increased traffic impacts.
Drivers should expect shifting lane closures along Sixth Avenue E from Second to Ninth Streets and on Central Entrance from Mesaba Avenue to Ninth Street. Intermittent, temporary closures of side streets will also occur while paving is underway. A short closure of Sixth Avenue E between Second and Third Streets will also be required. The existing closure on Sixth Avenue E between Fourth and Ninth Streets will remain in place. Some lane closures on MN-194 west of Mesaba Avenue will occur as needed.
This construction phase includes placement of a bituminous underseal, intended to improve the life span of the pavement surface, and an asphalt surface. Work is expected to take about two weeks, with the project on track for completion in mid-October of 2025.
The Sixth Avenue E reconditioning project includes:
- A new center median island between Fifth and Ninth Streets
- Traffic signal upgrades
- Street resurfacing from Second Street to Ninth Street and on Central Entrance from Sixth Avenue East to Mesaba Avenue
- Accessible sidewalk replacements
- Lane reconfiguration to improve safety and mobility
The City of Duluth thanks commuters for their patience during this busy construction season.
