Community support critical for fire victims

On the evening of November 15, 2010, the Kozy Apartments suffered significant damage due to a fire. All resident s were displaced and are being served by the Northland Chapter of the Red Cross and the Salvation Army of Duluth. The damage is extensive and initial assessments from the Duluth Fire Department indicate that residents will not be able to return any time soon.

Mayor Don Ness issued the following statement:

‘Our hearts go out to those who have lost their homes in this tragic fire.  This was a devastating event which has displaced many residents. The city is committed to working with the residents to ensure they have access to housing and to working with Eric Ringsred to assist with the future of the building.

‘We are grateful that all residents were evacuated safely and want to thank the 33 firefighters for their swift action to rescue the tenants under very dangerous conditions.

‘The Duluth community is known for its generosity and compassion for fellow neighbors. This is one of those times that call us to action. I encourage everyone to donate to the Red Cross or the Salvation Army who are assisting these individuals to meet immediate basic needs as well as look at future housing options.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so to the Northland Chapter of the Red Cross for their Disaster Relief Fund at (218) 722- 0071 or the Salvation Army at (218) 722-7934.
