SUBJECT: Increased DWI Patrol for Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend
BY: Officer Brad Wick, Information Coordinator

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Public Awareness
CASE NO.:
INCIDENT DATE: 11/24/2010
INCIDENT TIME:
INCIDENT LOCATION: Duluth and Surrounding Communities

The Duluth Police, St Louis County Sheriff, UMD Police, Floodwood Police, and Minnesota State Patrol will be partnering in a DWI saturation on Wednesday, November 24th, to kick off the Thanksgiving weekend. This saturation will feature increased enforcement along select corridors in the Duluth area. In addition to this, law enforcement will be deploying signage in an effort to generate a higher awareness to motorists and the community. Police or hoping this encourages all motorists to make safe plans and not drive impaired.

The Thanksgiving travel period is historically one of the deadliest of the year. There have been 16 deaths in the last three years during the Thanksgiving weekend, six of which were alcohol related. This has brought about an increased focus on traffic safety during this holiday weekend. Impaired driving is still a deadly threat on Minnesota roadways even though increased enforcement efforts resulted in a record-low 141 alcohol-related deaths in 2009. Still those deaths accounted for one-third of all traffic deaths.

Local law enforcement and Driving 4 Safe Communities are encouraging all drivers to take the initiative this weekend to make our roads safe.
