BY: Officer Brad Wick, Informatin Coordinator

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Stolen Vehicle Arrest
CASE NO.: 10416105
INCIDENT DATE: 12/1/2010
INCIDENT TIME: 7:15 PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: Lake Avenue and First Street

Eighteen year old Duluth male arrested after crash involving a stolen car.

On Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at 7:15 PM, Duluth Police came across a motor vehicle crash at Lake Avenue and First Street that had just occurred. As the officer approached the vehicles, one of the vehicles with two occupants backed up and began to leave southbound on Lake Avenue refusing to stop for the officers commands. This vehicle entered southbound I35 and a description of the vehicle including the license plate was given to responding squads.

A computer check of the Wisconsin license plate showed that the vehicle had been stolen earlier in Superior, Wisconsin. Within a short time the vehicle is located abandoned on southbound Highway 535 just north of the Port Terminal. A police canine tracked from the stolen vehicle to the 800 block of Garfield Avenue where the two occupants were found hiding.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, Michael Ray Hayward, age 18 of Duluth, was lodged at the St. Louis County Jail pending formal charges for Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Damage to Property, Fourth Degree Driving While under the Influence, Fleeing Police in a Motor Vehicle, and three counts of Hit and Run. A sixteen year old passenger in the stolen vehicle was cited and released to his parents.

Officers learned that the stolen vehicle had struck three different vehicles without stopping. No one was injured in any of these crashes. The investigation into the incident is ongoing at this time.
