Duluth Legacy Endowment Fund grants help improve public programs and resources

DULUTH, MN— The City of Duluth will be able to further enhance the public’s experience with literature, music, recreation and maintaining the city’s natural resources thanks to three grants from the Duluth Legacy Endowment Fund. The Fund’s vision is to support and preserve important community assets and services through private donations.

Also known as the Duluth Legacy Fund, it provides grants for arts and culture, education, health and wellness, and other activities that help keep the community prosperous and beautiful. It recently announced 2010 allocations totaling more than $3,000 for the following:

  • $1,235 to purchase new skates for the public to use at the seasonal outdoor rink at Bayfront Festival Park and for the indoor recreational skating program at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center;
  • $820 to provide ebook readers and MP3 players available to library patrons to use with a computer station at the Main Library in downtown; and
  • $1,031 to train citizens to do urban forestry.

The Duluth Legacy Endowment Fund was established in 2005 to provide a lasting way to enhance and preserve our community, neighborhoods and way of life for generations to come. The fund has 11 board members, appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council, all of which are Duluth residents and serve four-year terms. They are responsible for raising funds and distributing grants. Duluth City Departments can apply for grants on their own behalf or sponsor projects proposed by local charitable organizations. The Duluth Legacy Endowment Fund is a fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation.
