City asks residents to clear their sidewalks.
Neighbors helping neighbors makes a world of difference during snowy winter days. Duluth residents can help by clearing sidewalks 24 hours after a snowfall. Residents are asked to clear a three foot path for safe passage. The recent significant snowfall creates mobility challenges for everyone, especially those who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility.
A local group has convened citizens to form Duluth Digs, a community wide initiative to educate and alert residents to the importance of maintaining accessible sidewalks for all users. Far too many people with limited mobility become homebound or have accidents due to snow packed sidewalks.
The City of Duluth requests all residents and property managers to clear their sidewalks to ensure that people can safely get to work, school, appointments, or just for exercise. Duluth Digs and the city also want to recognize those individuals or groups who have made exemplary efforts to clear their sidewalks and those of their neighbors. Anyone can nominate someone. Nomination forms will be available on the City of Duluth website www.duluthmn.gov or by phone at (218) 730-4490. Chosen awardees will receive a certificate and those who have gone above and beyond will be recognized with a life size golden shovel.
Maintaining safe and accessible sidewalks is a community responsibility. Keep it clear; keep it safe; it matters.
