SUBJECT: Martin Luther King Day Celebration

 Events to Celebrate the 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday: revised as of 1/12/11

 

The public is invited to participate in a number of events in Duluth held Jan. 15-17 to celebrate and recognize the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.  All events are free

 

A program and meal of soup and bread will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 6:00 p.m. in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 835 W. College St., Duluth.  The program beings at 6:30 p.m. and will feature:

  • Excerpts of Dr. Kings “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” read by students from Central/Denfeld High School
  • Musical selections by Voices of Vision under the direction of Minister Gabe Green
  • Reflections from Dr. Mahmoud El-Kati, a history professor emeritus at Macalester College in St. Paul

 

On Sunday, a 4:00 p.m. community worship service will be held at the St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church, 530 N. 5th Ave East.

 

On Monday, Jan. 17, a Free Community Breakfast will be held starting at 7 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 230 E Skyline Parkway, Duluth.  The breakfast features a broadcast of Newark, NJ, Mayor Cory Booker’s speech. 

 

A March and Rally will take place after the breakfast.  Those planning to march from the Washington Center to the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC) should gather at 10:30 a.m. at the Washington Center.  The rally will begin at the DECC at 11:45 a.m.
